简而言之
- If you live and work near the inner city or along a high-frequency route, you can manage without a car: fares are a flat 50 cents and the Queensland Government has made that permanent.[2]
- Translink's high-frequency network means a bus at least every 15 minutes on weekdays, and on some train lines a train every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm on weekdays.[3]
- Outside those corridors, services thin out: on the Doomben line through Hendra, weekday daytime trains run about every half hour and Sunday trains about hourly.[8]
- A car pays its way for outer suburbs, industrial areas, shift work outside service hours, weekend trips out of the city, and households doing big shops and school runs.
The short answer: it depends on two addresses
Whether you need a car in Brisbane comes down to where you sleep and where you spend your weekdays. Put both addresses into the Translink journey planner for the hours you'd actually travel, including a Sunday. If both ends are near a busway, a high-frequency bus or a frequent train line, a car is a weekend extra. If either end is in an outer suburb, an industrial estate or a street with an hourly bus, it's probably not optional.
Cost isn't the deciding factor it is in other cities. Translink charges 50 cents a trip across all zones and modes, on a go card, a contactless card or a paper ticket; the Airtrain isn't included.[1] The Queensland Government announced in November 2024 that 50-cent fares would be permanent.[2] Contactless payment works with Visa and Mastercard cards and phone wallets; American Express is no longer accepted.[11]
Where public transport works well
Brisbane Metro. Council's two Metro routes are turn-up-and-go: M1 runs from Eight Mile Plains to Roma Street and M2 from UQ Lakes to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. They run every 5 minutes on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends.[4]
BUZ buses. Council runs 17 Bus Upgrade Zone routes, from 6am to 11.30pm, every 10 minutes or less in peak times and every 15 minutes or less at other times. The CityGlider runs 24 hours on Friday and Saturday and 18 hours a day the rest of the week, and there are free loop buses in the city centre.[5]
Trains. Translink counts as high frequency the lines between the city and Darra, Ferny Grove, Northgate, Cannon Hill and Coopers Plains: a train every 15 minutes or better from 7am to 7pm on weekdays.[3]
CityCats. The all-stops CityCat runs along the river from UQ St Lucia to Northshore Hamilton, across a network of 22 terminals; express services run only in weekday peaks.[6]
Short hops. Shared e-scooters and e-bikes are available in the CBD and inner suburbs for riders aged 16 and over, with a helmet.[10]
Where it thins out
Away from those corridors the timetable decides your day. Hendra is a good example. On the Thursday we checked, trains on the Doomben line ran about every half hour through the morning; on the Sunday after, about once an hour.[8] That's fine for a planned trip to the city and awkward for anything spontaneous.
- Late at night. NightLink services run between midnight and 5am on Friday and Saturday nights only, and NightLink trains stop on just the Beenleigh, Caboolture and Ipswich lines.[7] On a weeknight, a late finish can mean a taxi or rideshare home.
- Industrial and port areas. Factory, warehouse and freight streets often have one bus route or none, with services that stop before an early shift begins.
- Across the city, not into it. The network is shaped around the CBD; north-side to south-side trips often mean going in and back out.
- Outer suburbs and the hinterland. Day trips to the national parks, the coast or the Scenic Rim are hard or impossible without a car.
Park 'n' ride is the middle path: drive to a station and train in. A car can be left at a Translink park 'n' ride from the first service to the last; cars left for days may be treated as abandoned.[9]
Who usually needs a car in Brisbane?
| Situation | Car needed? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Inner-city flat, CBD or hospital job | Usually not | Metro, BUZ and trains cover both ends |
| Inner suburb, job on a frequent train line | Rarely | A car is a weekend convenience |
| Shift work starting before 6am or ending late | Often | Services start late and end early outside the frequent routes |
| Job in an industrial precinct or at the port | Usually | Few or no bus routes reach the work sites |
| Family with school runs and big shops | Usually | Several trips a day in different directions |
| Outer suburb or acreage | Yes | Hourly or no service |

Try living without one first
If you've just arrived, there's no rush to buy. Live on public transport for the first couple of weeks and keep a list of the trips that didn't work: the Sunday shop, the job interview in an outer suburb, the late finish. If the list is short, a taxi now and then costs far less than owning a car. If it's long, you know what you need the car for, and how big it should be.
If you need a car only for a defined stretch, such as a short contract or the months before you buy, renting by the week avoids registration, insurance and the loss on resale. Renting or buying a car for 3 to 6 months runs the numbers, and a 3-month contract in Brisbane looks at the job side.
