简而言之
- The Prince Charles Hospital (627 Rode Road, Chermside) has multi-storey and open-air car parks open 24 hours; the public rate tops out at $13 for 6 to 24 hours. Staff parking isn't on the public page, so ask your unit manager how permits work.[1]
- Buses serve TPCH from Rode Road, Hamilton Road and the hospital's own streets, including high-frequency route 340, and route 354 runs to Chermside bus station.[1]
- The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital has a busway station next door, and Metro route M2 ends there, running every 5 minutes on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends.[2][3]
- After a night shift, the safest drive is no drive: Queensland's road safety advice is to avoid driving at times you'd normally be asleep.[5]
Parking at The Prince Charles Hospital
TPCH is at 627 Rode Road, Chermside. Public car parks 1 and 2 are multi-storey, beside the main entrance off Rode Road, joined by an express ramp; car park 3 is open-air, opposite them near Building 7. All are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Height limits are 2.3 m in the new multi-storey and 2.1 m in the older one and on the ramp, so tall vehicles should use car park 3.[1]
| Stay | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to 15 minutes | Free |
| 15 minutes to 1 hour | $3.00 |
| 1 to 2 hours | $5.00 |
| 2 to 3 hours | $7.00 |
| 3 to 4 hours | $9.00 |
| 4 to 6 hours | $11.00 |
| 6 to 24 hours (daily maximum) | $13.00 |
Those are the visitor rates. The public page doesn't cover staff parking, and says there's no free visitor parking on the grounds.[1] If you're starting at TPCH, ask your unit manager or the hospital's parking office how staff permits are allocated, what they cost, and whether there's a wait. On visitor rates, a 12-hour shift costs the daily maximum each time.
Getting to TPCH without a car
Buses stop at and around the hospital:[1]
- Main Road, at the front entrance: route 354, to Chermside bus station at Westfield Chermside.
- Rode Road (stop 36): routes 598 and 599, the Great Circle Line.
- Webster Road (stop 38): routes 325 and 335.
- Wallace Street and Hilltop Avenue, at the hospital: routes 334, 354, 598 and 599.
- Hamilton Road at Farnell Street (stop 39): routes 325, 335, 340 (high frequency) and 353.
There's no train station at the hospital: Nundah, Toombul, Virginia, Sunshine and Geebung are each about 10 minutes away by car or taxi. A free six-seat courtesy shuttle loops around the campus from 7:30am to 5:30pm on weekdays, but not on public holidays.[1]
Look up the first and last trips on your route for each shift you're rostered. An early shift may start before the first bus, and a late shift may finish after the last one.
The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Herston
RBWH is far easier without a car. A bus station is next to the hospital, Brunswick Street and Bowen Hills train stations are each about a kilometre's walk away, and there's a taxi rank at the main entrance.[2] Brisbane Metro's M2 route runs between UQ Lakes and RBWH every 5 minutes on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends.[3]
For drivers, the on-campus car parks are Butterfield Street (closest to the main entrance), the Northern Car Park (P2, off Kauri Pine Street), Herston Road and Bramston Terrace, with more parks nearby, including two open 24 hours. They're run by private operators, so rates are on the operators' websites, and the hospital's page says nothing about staff parking.[2]
Night shifts: getting there and getting home
Public transport is thinnest exactly when night staff travel. NightLink services run between midnight and 5am on Friday and Saturday nights only.[4] On other nights, check whether the first morning service on your route leaves after your shift ends, and whether a taxi or rideshare home is safer than waiting.
If you drive, the drive home is the risk. Queensland's road safety guidance warns against driving at times you'd normally be asleep or after a full day's work, and notes that being awake for more than 17 hours affects driving much as a blood alcohol concentration over 0.05 does. It recommends stopping as soon as you feel tired.[5]
- Nap before the drive if you can, even 20 minutes in the staff room or the car with the doors locked.
- Pick the route with the fewest motorway stretches; monotony brings on microsleeps.
- If you live more than about half an hour away, consider a lift or a taxi after the last night of a run.
More on the warning signs is in long drives and fatigue.
Do you need a car for hospital shift work?
At RBWH, often not: the busway, Metro and trains are close. At TPCH it depends on where you live. If you're on a frequent route into Chermside, buses work for day shifts; a rotating roster with early and night starts is where a car earns its keep.
By road, TPCH is about 9 km from Hendra, around 13 minutes in light traffic on OpenStreetMap's routing.[6] Many agency and contract nurses are placed for a few months at a time; if that's you, a 3-month contract in Brisbane covers the questions to ask about the placement.
If your roster includes fly-out work as well, see a car between FIFO swings; airport shift workers have their own guide, getting to work at Brisbane Airport.
