Driving to O'Reilly's and Lamington from Brisbane: the road up

简而言之

  • O'Reilly's is in the Green Mountains section of Lamington National Park, about two hours' drive from Brisbane; Queensland Parks gives the park as about 110 km south of the city.[4][1]
  • The last leg is the one to plan for: Queensland Parks describes the 36 km road from Canungra as winding and often narrow, needing care and at least 50 minutes.[2]
  • There's no fuel on the Lamington Plateau. Fill up in Canungra or Nerang, and don't count on mobile coverage, which the park says isn't reliable.[2]
  • Parking at O'Reilly's is free, and the Green Mountains day-use area at the end of the road is open 24 hours.[4][3]

Which way do you drive from Brisbane to Canungra?

Everything funnels through Canungra, the town at the foot of the range. From the north, Queensland Parks' directions leave the Pacific Motorway at exit 34 for Beenleigh, follow route 92 to Tamborine, then route 90 to Canungra.[2] From the Gold Coast, it's 40 km from Broadbeach to Canungra via Nerang.[2]

Heading south from our Hendra yard on the Gateway Motorway means passing its toll point at Murarrie; Linkt lists A$6.02 for a car there at the time of writing.[6] How tolls on a rental reach you is in the Gateway toll guide. The Beenleigh–Tamborine leg also passes the turn-offs for Tamborine Mountain, covered in our Mount Tamborine guide, if you'd like to split the day.

What is the road from Canungra like?

Slow, and worth taking slowly. Queensland Parks calls it a 36 km winding and often narrow bitumen road that requires care, says it takes at least 50 minutes, and rules it unsuitable for motorhomes longer than 6 m and for anything towing a caravan or camper trailer.[2] O'Reilly's own directions are simply to follow Lamington National Park Road all the way up the mountain; passing O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyards tells you you're on the right road.[4]

  • Give yourself the 50 minutes and more. Plan to reach Canungra with time in hand rather than making it up on the climb.
  • Keep left on blind corners, and use a pull-over spot to let a queue past rather than holding it.
  • Use a lower gear on the way down if the car has a manual or low-gear mode, so the brakes stay cool.
  • Watch for wildlife and walkers near the top, where the road runs into the day-use area.

If you've not driven a long mountain road before, do the climb in daylight and on a dry day the first time. The return is often the harder half, because you're driving it tired after a day of walking.

Fuel, phone signal and help

Fuel and supplies are in Canungra and Nerang; there's no fuel on the Lamington Plateau.[2] Arrive at Canungra with enough in the tank for the climb, a few hours of idling around the top, and the run back down to town.

Mobile coverage isn't reliable on the plateau, though depending on your provider you can often get a signal near lookouts. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000), or 106 for a text-only call. The nearest hospitals are at Beaudesert, Robina and Southport.[2] There's no public transport to the park, and the park notes that getting a taxi to collect you there can be difficult.[2]

Before a long walk, Queensland Parks asks you to leave your plans with someone reliable, including your vehicle's registration, make, model, colour and where it's parked, the route you're taking, and when you expect to be back.[2] Note the hire car's details before you leave home.

What's at the top when you get there?

The road ends at the Green Mountains day-use area, open 24 hours, with free electric barbecues, picnic tables and flush toilets. The Green Mountains information centre is close by, and six walking tracks start from there, including the Centenary track, a 900 m universal-access track.[3] The park office and information centre are open Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 3.30pm, park duties permitting.[2]

O'Reilly's Tree Top Walk is free, with donations to the Green Mountains History Association welcomed. It's a string of nine suspension bridges, 180 m long and about 15 m above the rainforest floor, with two observation decks in a strangler fig, the higher one 30 m above the ground.[5] At O'Reilly's itself, parking is free, and the retreat's reception is open 8am to 8pm.[4]

Bring your own rubbish bags: there are no bins in the picnic areas and everything has to be carried out. Domestic animals aren't allowed in the national park.[2]

What's the weather like, and are there closures?

Lamington is on average 5°C cooler than Brisbane, can drop below 0°C in winter with frosts, and gets about 1,600 mm of rain a year, mostly in the November-to-March wet season. Take warm clothes and a raincoat in any season. Queensland Parks notes that people who know the park like walking it in winter, when views are less hazy, rain is minimal and leeches are uncommon.[2]

At the time of writing the park carries a "Severe Weather Damage" alert running from 14 March 2025 to 31 December 2026, and a facility upgrade alert for Woonoongoora Walkers Camp from 29 September to 30 November 2026.[1] Look at the park alerts the night before, since a damaged track can change which walk you do. Queensland Parks also advises against starting long walks after midday.[2]

Taking a Rentzy car up the mountain

Another rainforest drive on the same side of the city is Springbrook and the Natural Bridge, on the next range east. For a weekend further inland, see the Granite Belt.
