The cost of owning a car in Brisbane: a year, item by item

Коротко

  • Registration with CTP for a 4-cylinder private car is A$864.50 to A$880.50 for 12 months in Queensland (as at 1 October 2026).[1]
  • Insurance, fuel and servicing come on top, and insurance (unlike CTP) depends on your age, driving record and where you live.[3]
  • At the ACCC's Brisbane average of 237.4 cents a litre (21 October 2026), 12,000 km in a car using 8 L/100 km costs about A$2,279 a year.[4]
  • On our stated assumptions, a year of owning a 4-cylinder car costs about A$5,625 before parking, tolls, depreciation and loan interest.

What do you pay to own a car in Brisbane each year?

The costs split into the ones you pay whether or not you drive, and the ones that grow with every kilometre. Moneysmart's list of what to budget for is a good checklist:[3]

  • Fixed: registration (with CTP insurance included in Queensland), your own car insurance, your licence, and the value the car loses each year.
  • Running: fuel, servicing, tyres and repairs, plus parking, tolls and any fines.
  • Finance: interest, if you borrowed to buy it.

Moneysmart warns that running costs may be more than you expect and suggests working them out before you buy.[3] The sections below put a Queensland figure on each cost that has an official one, and say how to estimate the rest.

How much is registration and CTP?

In Queensland the registration bill has three parts: the registration fee (set by the number of cylinders), a traffic improvement fee and the CTP premium. TMR's 12-month figures for a private car, as at 1 October 2026:[1]

Queensland 12-month registration for a private car (A$, as at 1 October 2026)

7 or 8854.7067.25411.80–427.801,333.75–1,349.75

Renewing for less than 12 months costs more over a year, because a surcharge applies.[1] The CTP range reflects the three insurers' prices; you nominate one, and the premium is the same whatever your age or driving record.[2] What CTP does and doesn't pay for is in CTP insurance in Queensland.

What does car insurance add?

CTP covers injuries only, so most owners add their own policy for damage. Its price, unlike CTP, depends on your age, your driving record and where you live.[3] There is no official Brisbane average, so get two or three quotes for the actual car before you buy. For scale, Moneysmart's worked example of a car bought with a loan prices comprehensive cover at A$1,523 a year.[3]

Where the car sleeps matters to insurers and to thieves. A garage or off-street spot, and a few habits, are covered in how to stop car theft in Brisbane.

How much will fuel cost over a year?

Fuel is the running cost that's easiest to estimate: kilometres ÷ 100 × litres per 100 km × price per litre. The ACCC recorded a Brisbane daily average of 237.4 cents a litre for regular unleaded on 21 October 2026, down from 258.7 on 31 March but well above 188.8 on 20 February.[4]

At 12,000 km a year in a car using 8 litres per 100 km (our assumption for a small petrol car in mixed driving), that's 960 litres, or about A$2,279 at 237.4 cents. Each 10 cents a litre moves the year by about A$96.

Paying less per litre is mostly about timing and where you fill up: see finding lower fuel prices in Brisbane. For one week's driving in a particular car, use how much fuel a week costs.

Servicing, tyres, licence, parking and depreciation

  • Servicing, tyres and repairs. Moneysmart says these can cost hundreds of dollars each year;[3] an older car, or one past its warranty, can need more in a bad year. Ask a workshop for the scheduled service prices for the model you're considering.
  • Your licence. A 5-year Queensland licence is A$212.00 (as at 1 July 2026), about A$42.40 a year; a 1-year licence is A$94.65.[5]
  • Parking, tolls and fines. Moneysmart calls them an unpleasant surprise for new owners.[3] They depend entirely on where you live, work and drive, so price your own commute.
  • Depreciation. The value a car loses each year is a real cost even though no bill arrives. You only find out the figure when you sell, so look at asking prices for the same model a few years older.
  • Loan interest. If you finance the car, the interest and fees are part of owning it. If a loan isn't possible for now, see a car without finance.

If the car is partly used for work or a business, part of these costs may be deductible; how the ATO's rules apply to a rented car instead is in can you claim a rental car on tax?.

A year of owning a 4-cylinder car in Brisbane: worked example

Our assumptions, which are not official figures: a 4-cylinder petrol car, 12,000 km a year at 8 litres per 100 km, comprehensive insurance at Moneysmart's example figure, and A$900 for servicing, tyres and small repairs. Parking, tolls, depreciation and loan interest are left out because they vary too much to guess.

That's about A$108 a week before the car has lost any value. Replace our assumptions with your own quotes and kilometres; insurance and fuel move the total most.

Selling at the end adds its own costs, such as a safety certificate: see selling your car before you leave Queensland.
