Getting to work at Brisbane Airport on early and late shifts

Коротко

  • The Airtrain only serves the two terminals. On weekdays the first train to the airport leaves Central at 4:31am and the last train out of the airport leaves at 10:04pm; weekend trains start later.[1]
  • Airport workers with proof of employment can apply for discounted Airtrain tickets: a weekly ticket and a book of 20 single trips for people who don't work every weekday.[2]
  • Bus route 590 is the public transport link to the freight and business streets around Boronia Road, Lomandra Drive and Skygate.[5]
  • Staff parking at the terminals is allocated through your employer, not booked directly with the airport.[4]
  • If your shifts start before the trains or finish after them, a car may be the practical choice. Rentzy is at 238 Nudgee Road, Hendra QLD 4011, a short drive from the airport, with pickups in business hours only.

When does the Airtrain run for shift workers?

The Airtrain stops only at the International and Domestic terminals. If you work in freight, a hangar or an office park elsewhere in the precinct, read the bus section below as well.

These are the first and last departures Airtrain published for October 2026. Trains come every 15 minutes in peak periods and every 30 minutes outside them; on weekends and public holidays the page shows one train every 30 minutes.[1]

Brisbane Airport Corporation puts the trip between the airport and the city at about 20 minutes.[3] So a weekday 5am start is reachable from the city by train, a 4am start is not, and weekend trains start later still. A shift finishing after about 10pm leaves you with no train home on any day.

Is there a cheaper Airtrain ticket for airport staff?

Yes. Airtrain sells discounted tickets to people employed in the Brisbane Airport precinct, including workers at Skygate and the Brisbane Airport Service Centre. To qualify you show a current ASIC, an airport staff ID, or a letter from your employer with your full name, the employer's name and its contact details; the letter has to be renewed every 12 months.[2]

Paper weekly$48.00Unlimited travel for 7 days; sold at the airport stations and Central

Two limits matter. The tickets only cover travel between the airport stations and South Brisbane, Roma Street, Central, Fortitude Valley, Bowen Hills, Albion, Wooloowin and Eagle Junction; beyond those you need another ticket. And approval of an application takes 7 to 10 business days, so apply before your first week rather than during it.[2]

Which bus serves the freight and business areas?

Brisbane Airport Corporation describes one public bus for the precinct: Brisbane City Council's route 590, which runs seven days a week from the Skygate Centre and connects with trains at Toombul.[3] It doesn't stop at the terminals, so it's mainly useful if you work in the streets it passes.

On Translink's timetable, a northbound 590 trip comes from Garden City and Carindale through Cannon Hill and Murarrie, along Kingsford Smith Drive at Eagle Farm, and then through the airport precinct before running on to Hendra and Toombul. Its stops inside the precinct are:[5]

  • Boronia Road at the Aviation School, and Boronia Road at DHL
  • Lomandra Drive near Viola Place, and Lomandra Drive near Qantas Drive
  • Ninth Avenue at Skygate

Look up the first and last 590 trips for each day you're rostered in the Translink journey planner.

Can you ride a bike to work at the airport?

You can. Brisbane Airport Corporation says the airport is reached by a network of shared pedestrian and cycle paths, and points riders to the Cycling Brisbane route planner and its own cycling access map. Cycling isn't permitted on Moreton Drive, the main road into the Domestic Terminal.[3]

  • Domestic Terminal: bike parking near the lifts on Level 1 of the P1 car park, and dedicated parking for bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters on Level 1 of P2.[3]
  • International Terminal: bike parking beside the lifts on Level 5 of the P1 car park.[3]
  • Showers: available at both terminals for people who cycle in.[3]

The rules for sharing paths are in our guide to cyclists, scooters and pedestrians in Brisbane.

Where do airport workers park?

Brisbane Airport Corporation says there are three staff car parks for people working in the precinct, all next to the terminal buildings. Permits are allocated through an online system that your employer manages, so you apply, and change vehicles, through your employer rather than with the airport. The page doesn't publish a staff parking price, so ask your employer what, if anything, comes out of your pay.[4]

Contractors working for the airport corporation or a terminal tenant follow a different route: once registered, they can buy single-use prepaid tickets for the public car parks at $23 each. A ticket is valid for up to 12 hours from entry; stay longer and normal public parking charges apply.[4]

The airport's Transport Services Office handles company accounts and contractor tickets. It's at 9 The Circuit, next to Skygate, and opens 7am to 3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 7am to 1pm on Thursday, and not on weekends or public holidays.[4]

If you work outside the terminals, your workplace usually has its own parking; ask on your first day. For someone dropping you off or collecting you, the rules at the terminal kerbs are in picking someone up at Brisbane Airport.

Will driving to the airport cost you tolls?

It depends on where you live, not on the airport itself. From the inner north-east the road route needs no motorway: OpenStreetMap's routing from Hendra follows Nudgee Road, the East-West Arterial Road and Airport Drive to the terminals, about 6 km.[6]

Coming from south of the river, the direct road is usually the Gateway Motorway over the Gateway Bridges, which is tolled each way; what a car pays is in the Gateway Bridge toll. Coming from the north-west or through the city, a maps app may route you through AirportlinkM7, also tolled. Price your own route before you choose it. How Rentzy passes tolls on is in tolls in a Brisbane rental car.

When does a car make sense for shift work?

Public transport and a staff ticket cost far less than any car if your shifts fit the timetable. A car starts to earn its cost when they don't:

  • Your roster has starts before the first train or finishes after the last one on most days, not just occasionally.
  • You work in a part of the precinct the Airtrain doesn't reach, and the 590's hours don't cover your shifts.
  • You live beyond the stations the staff ticket covers, so each trip needs a second fare and a connection.
  • You're new to Brisbane and need transport from day one, before a staff parking permit or ticket application comes through.

If only one or two shifts a week fall outside the timetable, a taxi or rideshare for those trips can cost less than keeping a car all week.

Driving home after a night shift is when tiredness bites. Our guide to driver fatigue in Queensland covers the warning signs; if you're too tired to drive, don't.

Renting a car from Hendra for an airport job

  • Weekly prices: Medium SUV from A$229 a week · Small car from A$229 a week. Compare that with a staff ticket plus the taxi or rideshare fares you'd otherwise need.
  • Minimum rental: Each car has its own minimum rental, shown with the car (at the moment 8 weeks for every car).
  • Kilometres: Unlimited kilometres: no kilometre limit and no charge per kilometre.
  • Bond: a refundable A$500 bond is held separately from rent.
  • Notice: bookings need at least 24 hours' notice, so book before your first week starts.

Directions, a map and the hours are on our Hendra location page. Weekly and monthly costs are compared in weekly vs monthly car rental, and the full charges are on fees and charges.
