Noosa by car from Brisbane: parking, the national park and holidays

Коротко

  • Noosa Heads is about 138 km from our Hendra yard by OpenStreetMap's routing, nearly all of it on the Bruce Highway, then Eumundi Noosa Road into town: just under two hours before traffic.[1]
  • Parking is the hard part. Noosa Council applies 4-hour regulated parking at the national park's main entrance car park on Park Road and at Laguna Lookout, and 4-hour limits from 8am to 5pm at Noosa Heads Lions Park.[2][3]
  • In the Christmas and Easter school holidays, council has run free buses around Noosa Heads; over Easter 2026 a free loop bus ran every 15 minutes from 7am to 7pm.[5]
  • Driving on the beach at Noosa North Shore needs a high-clearance 4WD and a vehicle access permit, and a Rentzy car may not be driven on beaches at all.[6]
  • Unlimited kilometres: no kilometre limit and no charge per kilometre.

How long is the drive from Brisbane to Noosa?

From 238 Nudgee Road, OpenStreetMap's car routing heads north on the Gateway Motorway and stays on the Bruce Highway (M1) for about 94 km. It leaves the highway onto Eumundi Noosa Road, then follows Walter Hay Drive, Eenie Creek Road and Noosa Parade into Noosa Heads. In total it's about 138 km, which the router puts at about 1 hour 50 minutes in clear traffic.[1]

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service gives the Bruce Highway and Sunshine Motorway as the way to Noosa from Brisbane, so expect your maps app to offer either.[2] The route has no toll roads once you're north of the river, and the early part (as far as the Sunshine Coast turn-offs) is described in Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast.

Before you leave, look at QLDTraffic for crashes or roadworks on the Bruce Highway; it can also show planned roadworks and special events for a date and time you choose.[7]

Where can you park in Noosa Heads?

There are three places people usually aim for, and all of them fill on busy days. Know the limit before you walk away:

Parking near Hastings Street and the headland
WhereLimitGood for
Noosa National Park main entrance car park, end of Park RoadNoosa Council 4-hour regulated parking[2]The Coastal Walk and the day-use area. Queensland Parks calls it very popular and busy.[2]
Laguna Lookout car park, end of Viewland DriveNoosa Council 4-hour regulated parking; a small car park[2]The lookout over the river mouth
Noosa Heads Lions Park4 hours, 8am–5pm, introduced with the Hastings Street Association[3]Hastings Street shops and Main Beach

Council monitors parking with number plate recognition, and its parking rules are simple: obey the signs, and where there's no sign the Queensland road rules apply.[4] Four hours covers a walk and lunch but not a whole beach day, so if you plan to stay longer, park once somewhere further out and walk, or use the bus.

From Hastings Street, it's a 1 km walk (about 30 minutes) along the seaside boardwalk to the national park entrance.[2] There's also limited parking at the park's other entrances, from Parkedge Road and the northern end of Sunshine Beach.[2]

What's different in the school holidays?

Noosa gets very crowded: Queensland Parks puts the national park at more than 1.5 million visitors a year.[2] Noosa Council's Go Noosa programme promotes other ways of getting around during the busiest holiday periods to manage congestion.[5]

  • Free loop bus. For Easter 2026, council ran a free Go Noosa loop bus from Friday 3 to Sunday 19 April, about every 15 minutes from 7am to 7pm and every 30 minutes until 10pm, clockwise via Noosa Drive, Weyba Road, Noosa Parade and Hastings Street.[5]
  • Where to leave the car. That loop had temporary stops outside the Noosa AFL grounds and Farmers Market and near the post office in Noosa Junction, which makes it a way to park outside the Hastings Street crush.[5]
  • Christmas. Queensland Parks says to check for free public buses over the Christmas and Easter holidays, departing from Noosa Heads bus station platform 1 near Hastings Street.[2]

Dates and routes change each season, so check Noosa Council's Go Noosa pages shortly before you travel. If you're planning around Queensland's holiday dates, see school holidays and car hire.

What should you know about the national park by car?

  • Lock up. Queensland Parks asks visitors to lock their vehicle and take all valuables, including garage remotes.[2]
  • Mobile reception is patchy in parts of the Headland section, so download your map before you set off on a walk.[2]
  • Beaches around the park aren't patrolled by surf lifesavers, and the park doesn't recommend swimming there.[2]
  • Other sections have their own access. The Emu Mountain section is off the western side of David Low Way, with on-street parking in Havana Road East.[2]

Can you take a rental car onto Noosa North Shore?

Not onto the beach. The beach drive north from Noosa North Shore (Teewah Beach, in the Cooloola Recreation Area) is a 4WD route: Queensland Parks lists a high-clearance 4WD and a vehicle access permit, which must be bought before you drive in. You reach it by crossing the Noosa River on the Noosa North Shore Ferries, then entering the sand at the third beach cutting, where the bitumen ends.[6] Number plate cameras run 24 hours, and the permit must carry the car's correct registration.[6]

Planning the day around your rental

  1. Distance isn't a cost. Unlimited kilometres: no kilometre limit and no charge per kilometre.
  2. Check the car before a long run. Clause 7.1 of the terms asks you to check oil, water and tyre pressures on long trips and to stop and call us if a warning light comes on.
  3. Allow for the drive back. Close to two hours in clear traffic becomes longer on a holiday Sunday; a late return is charged as the fees and charges page sets out.
  4. Tired on the way home? Swap drivers only if both of you are approved on the booking; adding a driver explains how.
