Park and ride in Brisbane: where to leave the car and catch a train

Коротко

  • Park 'n' ride car parks at train stations and some bus and ferry terminals let you drive part of the way and finish the trip on public transport. Train station car parks are run by Queensland Rail; some bus and ferry ones by Brisbane City Council.[1]
  • You may park from the first service of the day until the last. A car left unmoved for days may be treated as abandoned.[1]
  • Translink's location list has 160 sites with about 35,850 spaces in total (our count of its list). The largest include Helensvale, Ferny Grove and Eight Mile Plains, each with more than 1,100 spaces.[2]
  • At the time of writing (November 2026), a Translink trip costs 50 cents on South East Queensland trains, buses and Brisbane City ferries, Airtrain excluded.[5]

How does park and ride work in Brisbane?

Translink describes it simply: you "park" your vehicle and "ride" public transport to complete your journey.[1] You drive to a station or terminal car park, leave the car, and take the train, bus, ferry or tram for the rest of the trip, usually into the city or to an event.

There's no booking. Spaces are taken as people arrive. Who runs the car park depends on where it is: train station car parks belong to Queensland Rail, and some bus and ferry terminal car parks to Brisbane City Council.[1] Stations can close for upgrades and works, so check Translink's service updates or journey planner before relying on a particular car park.[1]

How long can you leave your car?

Translink's rule is that a vehicle may be parked from the first service until the last service. A vehicle left parked and unmoved for an extended period of days may be treated as abandoned, and the appropriate authorities contacted.[1] So a park 'n' ride is for a day's travel, not a place to store a car while you're away.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads' park 'n' ride strategy (a 2019 summary) also notes that some facilities get used as "free parking" for nearby shopping centres, schools or hospitals, and that it may bring in control measures to keep spaces for commuters.[4] Read the signs at each car park: individual sites can carry their own time limits or conditions.

Which park 'n' ride car parks are the largest?

Translink publishes its locations with an approximate number of spaces each.[2] The biggest, at the time of writing, are mostly at the end of rail lines and busways, where a short drive replaces a long one:

Largest park 'n' ride car parks in South East Queensland (Translink list, read 5 November 2026)
LocationApproximate spaces
Helensvale station (Queensland Rail car park)[2]1,302
Ferny Grove station[2]1,290
Eight Mile Plains station[2]1,190
Murrumba Downs[2]1,050
Springfield Central station[2]1,010
Parkwood station[2]1,005
Robina station[2]950
Nerang station[2]780

Queensland Rail and the Department of Transport and Main Roads are still adding spaces. Completed expansions listed by Queensland Rail include 200 new spaces at Carseldine, 280 at Mango Hill, 250 at Lawnton, 132 at Murarrie and 50 at Virginia, with more in planning or under construction at stations such as Narangba and Bald Hills.[3]

Park 'n' ride on Brisbane's north side

On the north side, the station car parks in Translink's list near the airport and Nudgee Road are mostly small to medium:[2]

North-side station car parks (Translink list, approximate spaces, read 5 November 2026)
StationApproximate spaces
Northgate[2]375
Albion[2]280
Nundah[2]240
North Boondall[2]215
Wooloowin[2]175
Toombul[2]105
Eagle Junction[2]100
Sunshine (Geebung)[2]80
Virginia and Boondall[2]70 each
Nudgee[2]45
Banyo[2]30

Hendra, Ascot and Doomben stations don't appear in the list, so plan on parking elsewhere if you're driving to the train from there.[2] A car park of 100 spaces or fewer may be full by the time you arrive, so it's worth knowing a larger one on the same line as a fallback.

When is park and ride worth it?

  • Commuting into the CBD. You skip city traffic and city parking charges (compare parking in Brisbane's CBD), and the train fare is 50 cents at the time of writing.[5]
  • Events. Stadiums have no public parking and restrict nearby streets on event days; most major event tickets include the train ride. See Suncorp Stadium and the Gabba.
  • Peak hours. Morning traffic on Council's main roads is slowest in school term; Brisbane's worst times to drive has the numbers.
  • Not for Airtrain. The 50-cent fare doesn't apply to Airtrain, so a drive to the airport with its own parking may compare differently.

Paying for the train or bus

The 50-cent fare applies whether you pay with a go card, a credit or debit card, or a paper ticket. The South East Queensland network is cashless, but you can top up a go card with cash at fare machines at bus and train stations or at go card retailers.[5] Tapping on with the same contactless card you'd use anywhere else is usually the simplest choice for an occasional trip.

If you drive the whole way instead, the rules for T2 and T3 lanes on the way in are in transit and bus lanes in Brisbane.
