Getting to work at the Port of Brisbane

En resumen

  • The port is at the mouth of the Brisbane River on Fisherman Islands, reached by the Port of Brisbane Motorway and Port Drive.[1][2][4]
  • For most port jobs you'll need to drive or arrange a lift: we found no Translink route to the port's work precincts, and the port says there's no public transport to its cruise terminal.[7]
  • From the north side, the usual road route crosses the river on the Gateway Motorway, which is a toll road; the Port of Brisbane Motorway isn't on Linkt's list of toll roads.[8]
  • If your job takes you into a maritime security zone, even once a year, you'll need a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC), applied for by appointment at the port.[6]

Where is the port, and where will you be working?

The Port of Brisbane sits at the mouth of the Brisbane River and is run by Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd under a 99-year lease from the Queensland Government.[1] Most of it is on Fisherman Islands, where the state set out in 1976 to build a deepwater port.[2]

The port divides its land into precincts: Port Bris, Port Central, Port Gate, Port North and Port West.[3] Find out which precinct and which gate your job is at before day one. Container terminals, bulk berths, warehouses and offices are spread across a large area, and the gate you use decides where you park and how long the walk is.

The port is part of the wider Australia TradeCoast industrial area; jobs in Murarrie, Hemmant, Eagle Farm and Pinkenba are covered in getting to work at Australia TradeCoast.

Can you get to the port by public transport?

Not practically, for most jobs. We searched Translink's journey planner and found no bus route to Fisherman Islands or along Port Drive. The port's own visitor information says there are no public transport connections to the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, and no shuttle.[7]

The nearest trains are on the Cleveland line in the bayside suburbs; Wynnum North, for example, is served by T4 Cleveland and Shorncliffe trains.[9] From any station it's still a long way to the port's precincts, so the train only helps if your employer runs a pick-up or a colleague can collect you from a station.

Ask at your interview or induction whether there's a staff bus or a car-pool list. Port employers deal with this question all the time, and some rosters are built around car-pooling.

Driving to the port: the route and the toll

The port connects directly to the Port of Brisbane Motorway, which links to the Gateway, Ipswich and Logan motorways and the M1.[4] From the motorway, Port Drive runs into the port; it was duplicated for 4.2 km with a concrete median barrier in an upgrade finished in 2018, which also added a shared path alongside.[5]

From the north side, the road route crosses the river on the Gateway. OpenStreetMap's routing from Hendra to the port's MSIC Centre on Port Drive goes via Nudgee Road, Kingsford Smith Drive, Southern Cross Way, the Gateway Motorway and the Port of Brisbane Motorway: about 20 km, roughly 22 minutes in light traffic.[10]

The Gateway is a toll road; the Port of Brisbane Motorway is not on Linkt's list of Brisbane toll roads.[8] What a car pays at the Gateway toll point is in the Gateway Bridge toll. Twice a day, five days a week, the toll becomes a real part of the cost of the job, so add it up before choosing where to live.

Expect heavy vehicles. The port handles freight by road, and trucks over 4.5 tonnes need a permit or notice and the port's consent to use its roads.[4] Leave more space than usual, and watch for wide loads at roundabouts.

The MSIC card: sort it before you start

If you need to enter a maritime security zone even once a year, you need an MSIC. The port's MSIC Centre is at the Brisbane Multimodal Terminal, 52 Port Drive, open 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday, by appointment only.[6]

MSIC prices at the Port of Brisbane MSIC Centre (from 1 July 2026, including GST)
CardPrice
Two-year MSIC$495.00
Four-year MSIC$852.50
Converting an ASIC to an MSIC$209.00

The page doesn't give a processing time.[6] Ask your employer whether they pay for the card and whether you can start work before it arrives, and book the appointment as soon as you have an offer. Since the centre only opens on weekday business hours, you may need transport there on a day you're not yet working.

Shift work at the port

  • Rotating rosters mean some weeks you'll drive at dawn, others late at night. Plan for the hardest week, not the easiest.
  • Night shifts and the drive home. The route is mostly motorway, which is where tiredness is easiest to miss. Our guide to driver fatigue covers the warning signs.
  • Swings away. If you also fly out for work, a car between FIFO swings covers what to do with a car while you're away.

Renting a car for a port job

Directions and opening hours are on our Hendra location page; pickups are in business hours, so collect the car before your first shift.
