Tolls in Brisbane: which roads are tolled and how Rentzy charges them

In short

  • Brisbane has six toll roads: the Gateway Motorway (with the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges), Logan Motorway, AirportlinkM7, Clem7, Legacy Way and the Go Between Bridge. The Toowoomba Bypass is Queensland's other toll road.[1]
  • You never stop to pay: Queensland toll roads use free-flow tolling, and Linkt is the state's toll payment provider.[3][4]
  • Without a tag, account or pass, an unpaid toll becomes a toll notice with an extra fee, sent to the car's registered owner.[5]
  • In a Rentzy car, tolls Rentzy pays for you are recharged at cost plus A$5 per toll (fees and charges). Ask at pickup how tolls are handled for your car.
  • To skip tolls altogether, tick the option to avoid tolls in your maps app before you set off.[9]

Which roads in Brisbane are tolled?

Linkt, the Queensland toll payment provider, lists seven toll roads in the state. Six are in Brisbane; the seventh is the Toowoomba Bypass.[1]

Brisbane's toll roads
RoadWhere it runs
Gateway Motorway23.1 km from Nudgee to Eight Mile Plains, linking the Bruce and Pacific highways around the city centre. It crosses the Brisbane River on the two Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges (often called the Gateway Bridges).[2]
Logan Motorway39.5 km connecting the Gateway, Pacific, Centenary and Ipswich motorways, between Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich.[2]
AirportlinkM76.7 km twin tunnel in the northern suburbs linking Clem7 and Legacy Way (via the Inner City Bypass) to Brisbane Airport and the Australia TradeCoast precinct.[2]
Clem76.8 km twin tunnel under the Brisbane River, linking AirportlinkM7 and Legacy Way to the southern and eastern suburbs.[2]
Legacy Way5.7 km twin tunnel from the Western Freeway at Toowong to the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove.[2]
Go Between Bridge300 m river bridge from Merivale and Cordelia streets in West End to Coronation Drive and the Inner City Bypass in Milton.[2]

Toll prices change every year: AirportlinkM7 on 1 January, and the others on 1 July in line with Brisbane's consumer price index.[8]

How do you pay a toll in Brisbane?

You don't stop to pay a toll in Queensland: the toll roads use free-flow tolling.[3] Linkt is the toll payment provider in Queensland, on 13 33 31 or at linkt.com.au.[4]

How the toll gets paid depends on what the car is linked to:

  • A tag or account. Queensland tolls are deducted from the account as you travel.[5]
  • No account or pass. The Queensland Government says visitors and occasional users can pay a toll up to 3 days after using the road.[4] Linkt says you can cover the trip by buying a pass within 5 days of your first trip.[5]
  • Nothing arranged in time. A toll notice for the trip plus an extra toll notice admin fee goes to the vehicle's registered owner, with instructions on how to pay.[5][4]

For a hire car, the registered owner is the rental company, which is why the Queensland Government tells renters to check the rental company's tolling arrangements, and notes you may need the rental car's number plate to pay a toll yourself.[4]

How does Rentzy charge tolls?

The rental terms (clause 10) make you responsible for all tolls incurred during the rental. Here is how they reach you:

  • Tolls Rentzy pays for you are recharged at cost plus a A$5 administration fee per toll.
  • After you return the car, it is inspected within 48 hours. Tolls are itemised with the evidence and sent to you, and you have 72 hours to dispute a charge before it is collected.

A worked example: one trip across the Gateway Bridges costs A$6.02 for a car at the time of writing (October 2026).[8] If Rentzy pays it for you, you are charged A$11.02: the toll plus the A$5 fee. The full list is on fees and charges.

Which toll roads are near Hendra and the airport?

Rentzy's Hendra depot on Nudgee Road sits between the two toll roads that serve the airport, so it pays to know their entries before you leave:

  • Gateway Motorway. Linkt's toll entries and exits include Moreton Drive (the airport), Kingsford Smith Drive and Southern Cross Way, then Lytton Road, the Port of Brisbane Motorway and Wynnum Road on the way south to the Logan Motorway.[6] Linkt prices the bridge crossing at the Murarrie toll point.[8]
  • AirportlinkM7. At Toombul you can enter heading south (towards Kedron, Bowen Hills and Clem7) and exit heading north.[7] Driving from the Hendra area into the city or across to the south side, a maps app will often suggest AirportlinkM7 and then Clem7, which are two separate tolls.[8]

The trip to and from the airport itself is covered in Brisbane Airport to Hendra, and the road rules worth knowing before your first drive are in Brisbane road rules for visitors.

How do you avoid tolls in Brisbane?

Most trips can be made on free roads, usually with more traffic lights. The simplest way to stay off the toll roads is to tell your navigation app before you start:

  1. In Google Maps on a computer, get directions, choose Options and tick Tolls under avoid.[9]
  2. Check the route preview before you drive. If the only sensible route uses a toll road, the app may still include it.
  3. On a phone or in another app, look for the same setting in the route options, and set it again if you switch devices.

If you take a toll road by mistake, there's nothing to do on the spot. Note the road, the date and the time, and mention it when you return the car so you know what to expect on your charges.

When is a toll worth paying?

These are the car tolls Linkt listed at the time of writing (October 2026). Prices change each year, so check Linkt's toll pricing page before you rely on them.[8]

Car tolls, October 2026 (Linkt)
TollTollWith Rentzy's fee
Gateway Motorway (Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges, Murarrie toll point)A$6.02A$11.02
AirportlinkM7, Bowen Hills to ToombulA$7.16A$12.16
AirportlinkM7, Kedron to ToombulA$5.36A$10.36
Clem7A$6.77A$11.77
Legacy WayA$7.30A$12.30
Go Between BridgeA$4.22A$9.22

A toll tends to be worth it when it replaces a long run through city traffic: crossing the river on the Gateway Bridges instead of going through the CBD to reach the south-east, or using the tunnels in peak hour when the surface roads are crawling. It's rarely worth it for a short hop, or late at night when the free roads are clear.

In a rental, remember that each toll Rentzy pays carries the A$5 fee. Ten tolls in a week means ten fees on top of the tolls, so on a long rental a free route you can live with adds up. The weekly vs monthly cost guide shows how running costs sit alongside rent.

Tolls checklist for your rental

  1. At pickup, ask how tolls are handled for your car and write down its number plate.
  2. Decide before each trip: set your maps app to avoid tolls, or accept them knowingly.
  3. Keep a rough note of the toll roads you used, with dates, to check against your charges.
  4. Check the itemised charges after return and raise anything wrong within 72 hours.

Fuel, parking and fines work the same way as tolls in one respect: you're responsible for them during the rental. See fuel, parking and fines in Brisbane, and for every Rentzy charge in one place, the fees and charges page.
