Weekly vs monthly car rental: what it really costs at Rentzy

In short

  • Rentzy prices every car by the week: a "monthly" rental is the weekly price times the weeks you keep it, with no separate monthly price. Small car from A$160 a week · Medium SUV from A$229 a week.
  • Part weeks are charged per extra day (A$33 on the 2009 Mazda 2), and the extra days never cost more than one more week.
  • The refundable A$500 bond is separate from the rent; fuel, tolls, fines and any damage up to the excess are charged only if they apply.
  • Returning early doesn't refund unused days, so book the length you're confident about and extend if you need more.

Is there a separate monthly price at Rentzy?

No. Every Rentzy car is priced by the week, and a "monthly" rental is simply the weekly price multiplied by the number of weeks you keep the car. There's no separate monthly price and no different rate for booking a month instead of four single weeks: four weeks costs exactly four times the weekly price. At the moment that's Small car from A$160 a week · Medium SUV from A$229 a week, each "from" the lowest-priced car of that type. Each car has its own weekly price, shown on the cars page.

A calendar month isn't four weeks, though. A 30-day month is 4 weeks and 2 days, and a 31-day month is 4 weeks and 3 days. Rent is charged for your dates: whole weeks at the weekly price, and any other days at the car's extra-day price, never more than a week's price for those days. So when you compare a "month" here with a monthly quote elsewhere, compare the same dates, not the same label.

Each car has its own minimum rental, shown with the car (from 4 weeks to 10 weeks). One booking can run for up to 52 weeks, and you can ask to extend it. The weekly rental and monthly rental pages are the same offer seen two ways.

A dash means that car (or every car of that type) can't be booked for that length, because it's under the car's minimum or over the longest booking. These figures are rent only. Prices are in Australian dollars and include GST. No card surcharge. Your quote shows your car's weekly price and the total for your exact dates before you pay; the fees and charges page lists everything else.

How are part weeks charged?

Days beyond whole weeks are charged at the car's extra-day price, and those extra days never cost more than one more week. Here's how it works for the 2009 Mazda 2: A$160 a week, A$33 for each extra day.

Part-week rent for 2009 Mazda 2
Rental lengthHow it's chargedRent
4 weeks4 × A$160A$640
4 weeks + 1 day4 × A$160 + 1 × A$33A$673
4 weeks + 2 days4 × A$160 + 2 × A$33A$706
4 weeks + 3 days4 × A$160 + 3 × A$33A$739
4 weeks + 4 days4 × A$160 + 4 × A$33A$772
4 weeks + 5 days4 × A$160 + 5 extra days capped at A$160A$800
4 weeks + 6 days4 × A$160 + 6 extra days capped at A$160A$800
5 weeks5 × A$160A$800

From 5 extra days on, the extra days cost the same as a whole week, so if you need the car for 5 or 6 more days, booking the full extra week costs no more. Returning more than 30 minutes late adds extra rental time at your rental's price.

Online booking isn't open yet, so you request a car first; these payments apply once your booking is made. An A$100 deposit is paid online when you book. It is part of your rent, not an extra charge. The rest of the first period's rent and the bond are paid at pickup, at the counter.

On a longer rental you don't pay the whole period at once: the rental terms make rent payable weekly in advance, due on the same weekday the rental started (clause 3 of the rental terms).

The rental car bond, deposit and excess guide explains each of these in more detail.

What isn't included in the weekly price?

Unlimited kilometres: no kilometre limit and no charge per kilometre. The weekly price covers the car itself. These depend on how you use it, so they're charged separately and only if they apply:

  • Fuel: return the car with the fuel at the pickup level, or pay A$15 for each eighth of a tank below it.
  • Tolls: toll roads you use are charged at cost plus A$5 for each toll we pay for you.
  • Fines: traffic, parking and camera fines are yours, plus an A$55 administration fee each, or we nominate you as the driver where the law allows.
  • Damage: if the car is damaged or stolen, you pay up to the renter's excess of A$2,500 per incident (more in the cases listed in clause 9 of the rental terms).
  • Cleaning beyond normal use, and late return, as set out in the rental terms.

On a month-long rental, tolls are the easy one to underestimate: if your regular route uses a toll road, every trip is charged, so work out the route before you commit to it. Each toll is billed to you after it comes in, as listed on fees and charges.

Should you book a long rental or extend as you go?

Because there's no monthly price and extra time is charged at the prices you booked at, booking eight weeks costs the same as booking four and extending by four. What changes is the risk on each side:

  • Extending: Ask from your booking at least 24 hours before your return time; closer to it, call us. Our team approves each extension first; then you pay the difference before it takes effect. Extra time is charged at the prices you booked at. An extension depends on the car being free for the extra time, so if you know you'll need it, booking the longer period holds the car.
  • Returning the car early: unused days are not refunded. Rent stays payable to the end of the booked period, so don't book longer than you're fairly sure you'll need.
  • Cancel 48 hours or more before pickup: everything you paid online is refunded.
  • Cancel less than 48 hours before pickup: we keep A$100 (the deposit).
  • Not collecting the car (a no-show): we keep A$100.

If you're unsure, book the length you're confident about (at least the car's minimum) and extend if you need more.

How do you compare car rental quotes properly?

The ACCC's car hire guidance suggests asking a set of questions before you hire, starting with the total cost including liability cover and all extra costs.[1] Put each quote through the same checks:

  1. Total for the same dates. Ask for the total for your exact pickup and return, not a weekly or monthly headline. The ACCC says businesses must include all mandatory fees in the advertised headline price, though optional extras can be left out.[1]
  2. What the price leaves out. Under the national rental car industry guide, the advertised total doesn't have to include amounts you pay directly to an authority, such as tolls and parking.[2] Budget for those yourself.
  3. Kilometres. A low price with a weekly kilometre cap can cost more over a month than an unlimited one.
  4. Deposit and bond. The ACCC suggests asking whether there is a deposit, when it can be forfeited, and when the security deposit is refunded.[1]
  5. Excess and gaps in cover. Ask what you'd pay if the car is damaged, and whether there are gaps in the liability cover.[1]
  6. Early return. The ACCC lists whether you're entitled to a partial refund for returning early as a question to ask.[1] On a long booking, this matters more than a small difference in the weekly price.
