Ask these questions before you sort transport
Contract offers often name the company's head office, not the place you'll spend your days. Before you decide anything about a car, get answers to these:
- Which address will I work at? A city office, a project site in an outer suburb and a warehouse in an industrial area need three different answers.
- What are the hours? Early starts, late finishes, weekends and on-call weeks fall outside many bus and train timetables.
- Will I travel during the day? Visiting clients, sites or depots usually means a car, and the employer may supply a pool car or pay an allowance.
- Is there parking, and does it cost? City buildings often charge; industrial sites usually don't; hospitals and campuses vary.
- Do I carry tools or equipment? Bulky gear rules out the bus on day one.
- Does the role come with a car, a travel allowance or reimbursement? If it does, the rest of this guide may not apply.
Get the answers in writing if they affect your costs. Tax treatment of work travel depends on the type of trip, so keep receipts and check with the Australian Taxation Office or a registered tax agent rather than assuming a car will be deductible.
When public transport will do
Translink charges a flat 50 cents per trip on every service, however far you travel, with the exception of the Airtrain, where a go card is charged Airtrain fares.[1] For a city or inner-suburb job with ordinary hours, nothing else comes close on cost.

Many short-term contractors use a mix: public transport most days, a taxi or rideshare for the odd late finish, and a car hired only for the weeks with site visits.
Your options for having a car for 13 weeks

If you buy, Queensland registration doesn't have to be for 12 months: you can choose a shorter term, though renewing for less than 12 months adds a surcharge.[2] Through direct debit you can pay for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months at a time.[3] If you sell or scrap the car early, cancelling the registration can return the unused part of the registration and CTP, less a cancellation fee and not including the traffic improvement fee.[4]

A timeline that works for a short contract
- Two weeks before: confirm the site address and hours; test the public transport route if you're already in Brisbane.
- One week before: if you need a car, book it so it's ready the business day before you start. Rental bookings need notice, and pickups are in business hours.
- Week one: note what the job really needs. If you're not driving during the day, you may be able to hand a rental back early or switch to public transport; read the rental's early-return terms first.
- Last fortnight: if the contract is being extended, extend the car at the same time rather than on the last day.
